SERVIR Applied Sciences Team (AST) Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Jim Nelson of Brigham Young University (BYU) was featured in a recent news article posted online by BYU.  The article focused on his streamflow forecasting activities, as PI of a recent SERVIR AST project, ‘Comprehensive Stream Flow Prediction and Visualization to Support Integrated Water Management’, co-developing streamflow forecasts tools with SERVIR-Hindu Kush Himalaya, and supporting the Group on Earth Observations Global Water Sustainability (GEOGloWS).  The article detailed the role of these tools in assessing flood and drought risk, providing warning of potentially severe flooding, and allowing countries to rapidly respond to these natural disasters.

The article highlighted the role SERVIR plays in making such tools available to meet the decision-making needs of local agencies in SERVIR hub regions.  Dr. Nelson serves as PI on one of SERVIR’s current AST projects, ‘Improving Resiliency and Reducing Risk of Extreme Hydrologic Events through Application of Earth Observations and In Situ Monitoring Information’, which is co-developing tools to support SERVIR-Amazonia hub services. The article also mentioned fellow AST PI Norm Jones, also of BYU, whose AST project is co-developing ‘Geospatial Information Tools That Use Machine-Learning to Enable Sustainable Groundwater Management in West Africa’. The original article, available here, was also picked up by local news agencies in Provo, Utah.
