Video: the GEOGLoWS Tool in Ecuador

(in English and Spanish)

SERVIR-Amazonia GEOGloWS Service (English)

This video provides an overview of the GEOGloWS tool in Ecuador.

English transcript:

The GEOGloWS tool in Ecuador are web applications for monitoring and forecasting hydrometeorological events using global models, satellite information, and observed data, and can help subnational and national governments in their responsibility of prevention and resilience.

The applications were developed in conjunction with the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Ecuador and EcoCiencia Foundation, with the technical leadership of the Applied Science Team of Brigham Young University and with the implementing support of the Alliance Biodiversity - CIAT within the framework of the SERVIR Amazonia program.

There are five hydrological and two meteorological applications which provides essential information for the management of extreme events such as the El Niño phenomenon.

  • Hydroviewer Ecuador will allow GADs technicians and technical-scientific public institutions to obtain information on historical flows at the national level, from the global GEOGloWS model. It provides hydrological forecasts 15 days in advance, and also generates alerts in case of reaching danger thresholds.
  • The Historical Validation Tool, National Water Level Forecast, as well as Hydroviewer, provide historical information and forecasts of flows and levels, respectively. In this case, the model’s data is corrected considering the observed information from hydrological stations at the national level.

All three applications have new internal procedures that improve the speed of processing and displaying results. This provides advantages in operational use, especially in risk management, which requires a quick and timely response.

  • Water Data Explorer is an application for viewing and downloading historical flow data. It is implemented under the standards of the World Meteorological Organization. It presents interactive graphs and tools that allow the analysis of information in an agile and simple way.
  • The Water Mapping App provides a framework for downloading and viewing satellite information regarding flood marks. In other words, it makes it possible to determine the flooded areas after the extreme event. This helps as sources of information for the validation of hydrodynamic models.

The Climate Trend and Met Data Explorer applications  provide catalogs of weather information from satellite sources, global models, and reanalysis. In addition, it has the outputs of the weather prediction model for Ecuador, thus facilitating access to this type of information to the technicians of the GADs, technical-scientific public institutions, and communities.

These tools could be used to manage the adverse events and havoc generated by the El Niño phenomenon.
